Packages

Options we offer

There are three main packages that we offer: Short Safari; Cultural Safari; and Great Water Adventure. The activities are arranged here to suit visitors with between 2 and 4 nights to spend with us, but they can be put together in any way you want.

1. Short Safari – 3 days and 2 nights

This is a popular option for people working in Dar es Salaam, because it can (more or less) fit into a weekend. However, anyone is welcome to choose this package, and you can do this 3 day/2 night option at any point in the week.

Day 1

Private pick up from Dar and arrive for lunch, or if arriving late then just light refreshments.

Sunset cruise on our comfortable river boat, looking at hippos, crocodiles and birds, and enjoying the spectacular sunset over this enormous river. This is one of Africa’s five greatest rivers, over half a mile wide where the lodge is, with panoramic views across the water to distant hills. The colours are breathtaking.

Cold drinks from the bar, then dinner.

Day 2

Early breakfast at 06.00 and then a 30 minute drive to the Selous Game Reserve. All day private game drive in a specially modified safari vehicle with a professional guide, in which you should see and learn much about a large number of animals, including all the great favourites – lion, elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra – and all the other major species including the rare African wild dog. Great variety of bird species. Wonderful scenery, with varied topography: wetlands, dry grassland, light acacia forest and higher ground with long views to far-off mountains.

Packed lunch and time to rest. Your guide will select a location with shade and water nearby to watch animals coming to drink – a place with a clear view all round so that no predator can creep up unseen!

Back to the lodge by 6.30 for sunset and dinner when you’re ready.

Day 3

Up early for a walk through the bush and along the riverbank to learn more about the local environment. Our local guides will tell you all about the fauna & flora; almost every plant and tree is used locally in one way or another. You will be fascinated.

Back after the walk for breakfast, and then departure for Dar.

  2. Cultural Safari – 4 days/3 nights

Days 1 and 2

as for the Short Safari above.

Day 3

A relaxed start to the morning, as spending all the previous day in the game reserve takes plenty of energy.

After breakfast we visit local villages where activities can include looking around the market and shops, visiting schools, visiting work places such as a carpentry workshop, and paying a visit to a family at home.

Back to the lodge for lunch.

In the afternoon by boat to visit people who live by fishing or farming along the river, and learn more about life in rural Africa. Back in time for sunset, drinks and dinner.

Day 4

The day begins with the bush walk already described. Back after the walk for breakfast, and then departure for Dar.

3. Great Water Adventure – 5 days/4 nights

Days 1, 2 and 3

as above.

Day 4

Early breakfast, and then to the game park by private vehicle again to visit some areas of the park which you have not seen on Day 1, with different terrain and animals. Packed lunch.

After lunch, we will pick you up inside the park in our boat and take you back to the lodge by river, which will take all afternoon. If the water depth is adequate, this will include exploring some of the large lakes that are linked to the Rufiji River. Access is through narrow channels where you have to duck down beneath the trees and bushes to pass for a hundred metres or so before emerging in open water. This is exciting stuff, and enables you to reach places inaccessible by vehicle.

Along the river you may be lucky and see elephants bathing and drinking, while large numbers of hippo are more or less guaranteed, mainly in the water but from time to time coming up on to the banks. We turn off the engine for a while once in the mainstream and drift with the current back down to the lodge with just the sound of bird call, timing arrival for sunset.

Day 5

As above – start with a local bush walk, then back for breakfast before departure for Dar.
